[comp.sys.ibm.pc] 1Mb memory problem.

dennett@usage.csd.unsw.oz.au (Dennett Jaques) (06/12/90)

G'day there,

I'm posting this question for my brother who has come
by a 12MHz 286 clone with 1Mb of memory which fully
populates the motherboard.

The problem is there does not seem to be any way to
configure this memory to be 640k base, 384k extended.
When the system boots it displays the memory count up
to 1024k but allocates this as 512k base, 512k extended.

The CMOS does not allow any other setting. The bios is AMI,
the RAM chips are 41256's (36 in all).

There is only one dip switch block on the motherboard the
settings of which only allow specification of total memory
installed on the motherboard.

Checking with Quarterdecks Manifest or other memory mapping
programs also show 512k base, 512k extended.

What is going on here?
Can someone explain this?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks
