The film, originally a stage play, is a scathing satire of the British ruling class and stars O'Toole as Jack Gurney, son of the 13th Earl of Gurney, a gentle lunatic who believes he is Jesus Christ. When Jack's father, the Earl, dies under unusual circumstances, Jack becomes the earl, to the horror of his family. The bulk of the film is devoted to Jack's family's efforts to either cure Jack of his delusions, or have him locked up for good. Jack, needless to say, deftly sidesteps all of their efforts. In addition to O'Toole, the film features several prominent British character actors, and contains some of the funniest scenes to appear on film. Go see this film. (***1/2*).
