Here is the amount of space Windows 3.0 takes up on my harddrive. \windows total 8,826,880 bytes Swap 5,244,928 (optional) exe 1,847,296 (most are optional) txt 219,136 (optional) hlp 780,288 (optional) ini 12,288 sys 81,920 (most optional) bmp 393,216 (optional) grp 36,864 (optional) \system total 2,189,312 fon 288,768 (optional) exe 1,169,408 (This total includes five V-RAM display drivers which total 385,624 bytes; only one of these drivers is needed.) I find this to be a very acceptable size for a program which does as much as Windows 3.0 does. In comparison to other programs I have seen, like Unix, X-Windows, Emacs, anything by GNU, and PC-Tools, I do not find the actual 4 megs taken up by Windows to be too much. A 5 meg swap file is small compared to UNIX 5.3 and especially 5.4. Also Windows 3.0 runs fast with plenty of run in 4 megs of memory, I havn't seen X-Windows and UNIX run in less than 8 Megs. In fact 8 megs is the MINIMUM recommended. The included applications are robust and have plenty of features. The environment is usable from the first day you install it. Try using Write for a while, it will do most things that people need it from a Word Processor. I didn't use anything else for my Electrical Engineering courses. I paid $100 for PaintBush one year ago ( of course my version has scanner support, but alas I do not have a scanner). If you do not need a script language Terminal only lacks a phone book, logging, and more transfere protocols. -----Dale Rogerson-----
