my housemates, ignorant of modems and computers in general, got call waiting without asking for my vote (sigh)... i remember from many months ago a discussion on ways to temporarily disable call waiting... something like dialing 70#... i also remember hearing that it didn't work in every exchange, so whom at NYNEX can i ask for the straight story? much thanks tony anthony m. petro "beethoven" i can say what i want; i'm just an undergrad V118HJ3D@UBVMSD.BITNET "soon the gypsy queen in a glaze of Vaseline petro@sun.acsu.buffalo.edu will perform on guillotine; what a scene, ..!uunet!acsu.buffalo.edu!petro what a scene..."

The easy way is to try #70 or 1170 (generally equivalent). If you hear a double click and more dial tone, then it works. -- _ Kevin D. > i remember from many months ago a discussion on ways to temporarily disable > call waiting... something like dialing 70#... 70# will indeed cancel call waiting on the telephone system here (GTE). After entering this command, wait for another dial tone and then dial the number. Call waiting will be canceled for the current call and then resume. This can be automated by prefixing your numbers with 70#,,,,, in your terminal program's directory or as a standard prefix. The commas instruct a Hayes compatible modem to wait long enough for a dial tone before dialing. Thor Hallen Tektronix, Inc.

I'm not from NYNEX but here goes. To disable call waiting either before making a call or while in the middle of one you can dial either #70 or 1170 (this is for pulse users) This disables Call Waiting for the current call only. After dialing this code you should hear a regular dial tone. If you are in the middle of a call and want to disable CW, click the receiver once or press the FLASH button once and then dial the code and return to your previous call. -Jeff (jaltman@ccmail.sunysb.edu)

So, if you are in progress after answering a call, the ring from the later incoming call disconnects the carrier, in my experience. I have yet to find a way to disconnect call waiting from a modem when you do not originate the call. Can anyone help with this? Charlie (charlie@hp-lsd.hp.com)
