[comp.sys.ibm.pc] A few small hardware questions, and one programming one

lfk@E40-008-6.mit.edu (Lee F Kolakowski) (06/13/90)

I have a WD1003-WA2 MFM Disk controller and a Priam ID45-H hard disk and
I need some more space. I was wondering about RLL controllers esp.

	1) Are they less reliable than MFM?
	2) Does this drive handle RLL well?
	3) What kind of space improvements can I expect?
	4) What reccommendations are there for a controller board?

I also need to get some more memory for a data analysis program I have.

I am planning of switching to unix in the next 1-2 yrs. (When I get Rich :-))

Can I buy a 16 bit AT board and put some of the ~75 256-10 chips I
have now, in the board for a 2 MB more memory. Then later yank out
those chips and put in 1MB simms?

Finally, when I get all this new found memory space as extended memory
is there some example code some kind soul could share (in C pref.)
that could show me how to allocate large (512Kb) arrays for data?

Thanks for all this in advance. I apologize for my seeming ignorance
about hardware, but you know how it goes...

If you get one that is compatible with your computer they aren't any less
reliable than mfm -- in fact, they may be more so.

don't know -- it probably will

about 26/17 times as much space as you have now -- that is, a %53 improvement
sometimes you can get a 31/17 = %82 improvement with some drives and some
controllers

I would say either a wd1006v board or an adaptec 2372C (<--i think)
