It finally came, and I've been running various benchmarks. The following results are with the BIOS loaded into RAM and both caches turned on; I'll post the results with various combinations of these three off in a few days, in addition to further benchmarks. Kevin Murphy's CPU Benchmark Utility (1.10) 4.77 MHz XT 10.00 seconds 25 MHz 486 .22 seconds Power Index 45.45 I was worried for a few seconds when I noticed that the bar graph indicated an effective speed of 56.81 MHz, which is only slightly faster than a 20 MHz 386. However, it turned out that the bar for the 486 had wrapped around, and that for this test the 486 was equivalent to an XT running at 216.80 MHz (a difference of 160, which tells us something about how the program calculates its results). -- Microdesigns IBM Compatible Performance Analyzer 2175%, relative to an XT. -- L. T. Software's Throughput Benchmark (5.01) 11577.5% (apparently relative to an XT). -- Norton's System Information (1987) CI = 41.0 (relative to an XT). This is an outdated version of SI; the newest version should give a result in the high 90's. -- PC Magazine Laboratory Benchmarks Series (5.1) Test Machine: This 80486/25.0 Computed CPU: 80386 25.0 Mhz Machine "A": IBM Model 70/25 Mhz Machine "B": 8Mhz IBM PC/AT TEST MACHINE MACHINE MACHINE "A" "B" ======= ======= ======= PROCESSOR PERFORMANCE TESTS: Instruction Mix - 8088 1.58 2.41 9.14 Instruction Mix - 80286 1.48 2.33 9.06 Instruction Mix - 80386 1.46 2.19 N/A 128K NOP Loop 0.44 1.34 4.17 Do-nothing Loop 0.63 1.02 3.64 Integer Add 0.21 0.49 2.14 Integer Multiply 0.24 0.34 1.21 String Sort and Move 0.45 0.73 2.93 Prime Number Sieve 0.12 0.52 3.02 Floating Point Mix 2.37 4.01 17.24 COPROCESSOR PERFORMANCE TESTS: Coprocessor Type 80387 Math Coprocessor 0.17 0.33 2.47 DISK PERFORMANCE TESTS: BIOS DISK SEEK Sequential 3.46 13.22 10.11 Random 16.86 24.52 37.46 DOS DISK ACCESS 18.40 27.61 42.68 DOS FILE ACCESS (SMALL RECORDS) 512 RECORDS/512 BYTES EACH File Create 8.90 9.03 10.32 Sequential Write 17.08 17.49 9.01 Sequential Read 0.66 8.90 10.27 Random Write 14.45 18.40 12.69 Random Read 6.92 10.44 18.40 ------- ------- ------- TOTAL (512/512) 48.01 64.26 60.69 64 RECORDS/4096 BYTES EACH File Create 1.42 1.72 2.86 Sequential Write 1.38 1.52 2.53 Sequential Read 0.44 1.47 2.74 Random Write 1.20 1.72 3.14 Random Read 1.21 1.65 3.18 ------- ------- ------- TOTAL (64/4096) 5.65 8.08 14.45 ======= ======= ======= TOTAL (SMALL) 53.66 72.34 75.14 DOS FILE ACCESS (LARGE RECORDS) 16 RECORDS/16384 BYTES EACH File Create 0.60 0.83 2.09 Sequential Write 0.54 0.71 1.86 Sequential Read 0.44 0.66 1.93 Random Write 0.61 0.75 1.98 Random Read 0.55 0.71 1.98 ------- ------- ------- TOTAL (16/16384) 2.74 3.66 9.84 8 RECORDS/32768 BYTES EACH File Create 0.66 0.79 1.92 Sequential Write 0.50 0.58 1.82 Sequential Read 0.38 0.53 1.81 Random Write 0.49 0.60 1.81 Random Read 0.44 0.55 1.86 ------- ------- ------- TOTAL (8/32768) 2.47 3.05 9.22 ======= ======= ======= TOTAL (LARGE) 5.21 6.71 19.06 ======= ======= ======= TOTAL (SMALL AND LARGE) 58.87 79.05 94.20 VIDEO PERFORMANCE TESTS: Direct Screen Access 2.69 6.53 9.12 Teletype Without Scrolling 1.10 0.66 7.25 Teletype With Scrolling 2.20 3.40 11.20 MEMORY PERFORMANCE TESTS: Conventional Read 0.22 0.33 1.43 Conventional Write 0.22 0.33 1.43 Expanded Read 0.55 N/A 2.41 Expanded Write 0.49 N/A 2.42 Extended Read NOT RUN 1.81 11.97 Extended Write NOT RUN 1.53 11.92 -Chris
