Try getting /pc/ts/tsbat21.arc by anonymous ftp from chyde.uwasa.fi,
Vaasa, Finland.  It has quite a number of batch files with
accumulated batch tricks and information, including the solution to
your current query.

    Actually, you can.  Microsoft C 5.1 came with a program called
ERROUT that would redirect the error output.  I've never looked at it to
see how (or how well) it works.
