[comp.sys.ibm.pc] 386SX Performance/Coretest

carpio@questor.wimsey.bc.ca (antonio carpio) (06/07/90)

Thanks to A. Schmidel of Dallas and Tim of the U. of Denver for your
comments on the performance of my 386SX. It is comforting to know that my
Deico motherboard is considered high quality. Regading the data transfer
rate of 460 Kb/sec on my IDE drive, which Schmeidel mentione was already
"great" but could be around 600 if run optimally, I called the dealer who
then checked with the supplier (it is a Miniscribe 80 MB IDE drive) who
advised that Corest, while measuring data transfers on MFM and RLL control-
lers adequately, does NOT measure IDE results propertly (IDE being
relatively new). Coretest is reportedly coming up with a new version
which will measure results from IDE drives propertly. Does this make
sense? By the way, yes, I am happy with my set thus far.

I have a program I got off compuserve called hdtest that seems to work fairly
well. I just installed an adaptec SCSI controller and I get >700Kbytes/sec.

Now THAT is flying.

I have a 177Mb Imprimis IDE (type no. is buried inside the computer...)
and a 386sx board. Coretest report 826 Kb/sec. as typical trensfer-rate
(830 Kb/sec. peak). This when I set the bus clock as PROCCLK/2 (8 Mhz).
Before I had bus clock as ATCLK and transfer-rate is 520 Kb/sec. :-(
Obviously interleave is 1:1.
Bye.
