[comp.sys.ibm.pc] RPG programming on my MS-DOS PC?

fverduin@neabbs.UUCP (FRANS VERDUIN) (07/02/90)

Dear friends,

During the next 6 months I'm joining an AS/400 programmer/analist course. In
a few weeks we'll start with RPG programming. Does anyone of you know if
there's a RPG compiler or interpreter for MS-DOS?

I've tried to find one here in Holland without succes. It's just for edu-
cational purposes, so RPG version, slow, or simple, it doesn't matter at all.
It only has to be public domain or (very) low-cost.

Thanks in advance.

Lattice makes a RPG compiler that is compatible with the System 36/38s,
and should handle most, if not all of the AS/400 options. It runs in DOS,
and uses DBASE III+ file structures for Index files, and is Network
knowledgable. I have been written an online registraion system on a
Novell Network using it, and have converted may System 34 Programs using it.
I have found a few bugs in it, but it has gotten pretty good. Have just
ordered the latest update 3.1, and this should fix the record locking
problems I ran into. (This is the same company that makes the C Compiler)
Don't have the address handy, but if you need it let me know.

Even if it just for educational purposes the version can make a large
difference. RPG/400 is -similar- to S/38 RPGIII but with each release
it will change. RPG/400 is *VERY* different from S/36 RPGII. Externally
described files, introduced on the 38 make a big difference.

Check with the person teaching the course, if the course will cover DDS,
and it should, then the Lattice compiler may not be sufficent.

If the company offering the course (IBM??) is willing, it may be best
for you to dial in to there machine and use the current (Rel 2.0) version of
their compiler.

Sorry to ruin your day with this info.
