[comp.sys.ibm.pc] The IBM PC...

jsaxon@cs.tamu.edu (James B Saxon) (06/12/90)

For the fortieth time in my life I had the pleasure of sitting down at
another wonderful IBM PC. This one had a mouse and color and everything!
Oh boy what fun... I just wanted to say that anybody who thinks that
the IBM pc is anything but a suped-up apple II is out of their minds.
It is an example of the kind of stupidity that Mayor Koch has been
accused of presiding over. There is nothing in the slightest bit
natural about using a PC. There is nothing logical about it either.
Every system is different. No system is failsafe. I have never
been so pissed off as when I sit down on one of these pieces of junk
to look at a new program, an expensive program, the best out, and find
that it has as much charisma and agility as a dead rat. YOU PEOPLE
just don't understand the power of freedom. You are the victims of
cybercrud. You may be intelligent but you are as misguided as lemmings.
May you get the most out of your software but realize that your eyes
are closed. I look at the IBM pc as the defunct concept of communism in
a world where capitalism is winning out plain and simple. The longer
you keep one hand on your pants and one on piece of junk keyboards,
you'll go through a real catharsis one day when your jobs dry up...

Later....

James Saxon

DON'T RESPOND TO THIS GUY!!!

He probably won't see it anyway.
He's got a .edu extension, so his account is probably dead by now
due to school letting out!

I saw this and I just *had* to respond...

Dear James, (I hope you read this)

I feel I am more than qualified to answer your 'tirade' against the
IBM PC & compatable systems. I have owned most of the popular computer
systems, including the Macintosh. I was the system administrator for several
Sun minicomputers, and have experience with many mainframe systems.

Disappointment may be the best word to describe my reaction to your
article. Computers are like tools - everybody has their favorite tool when
they're working on a task. As a professional writer, I used to favor my
Macintosh. But, the Mac failed to appeal to the "hacker" in me. So, I
started using my AT-compatable, equipped with a hard drive & windows.
This combination has kept me happy for some time, but now I'm looking
to convert to Unix. This. of course, is much easier on an AT than a Mac+.

Ask yourself this: who is the least flexible - the person who uses the
system that they find most comfortable, or someone who damns anybody who
doesn't conform to what he feels is the "right" way of doing things?

Instead of spending your time & net dollars making uneducated statements,
consider using your energies to do something constructive. Maybe you can
design the "perfect" computer. But don't expect me to buy it.

Sincerely,

Peter L. Wargo

Hmmm. This is either a "just say no to drugs" message or a Tucks ad
that escaped prime time tv. Relax James. We'll see you in the real
world.

I'm taking a break from work right now and just came across this note and
thought interesting to respond... The outrage, being only a college student,
is understandable...

To who ever wrote the about note,
If you don't see the advantage of IBM PC's and compatibles, you should
consider bringing youself up-to-date once in a while, I mean majorly.
What but an ibm-compatible can give you near mini performance for a fraction
of thier prices? And ibm stands for quality, they just won't break, that's
my experiences (8 years) with them...

[... MANY lines of blathering about how BAD IBM hardware is, deleted ...]

40th time sitting down in from of one right? And it's taken you this long to
form an opinion? Don't tell me, let me guess... Someone held a gun to
your head and FORCED you to use one, right?

MUCH later I hope... Go home and play with your Timex

But before you do, fix your .sig. There are _80_ characters per line,
not 90. And check your quote <sigh...... where DO they come from?>

Unfortunately I can't afford a Kray this week, so -
has anyone got a (PD) Kray emulator for a '286 clone, so's I can start
testing my Kray_C PC emulator.

Please E-mail me first, I don't want to get dozens of copies...

Ta!
