[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Remac - sound program for MS-DOS compatibles???

tluteran@bbn.com (Thomas Luteran) (07/05/90)

I've been seeing references to a program called "remac", for generating
sounds on an MS-DOS compatible PC. What exactly does this program do?
Is this available by anon ftp from somewhere? If so, where?
Thanks in advance for the info.

remac1.zip has a program to play (macintosh?) sound files (.sou?)
on an IBM PC.

Try anonymous ftp from terminator.cc.umich.edu. Back on Tue, 19 Jun 1990,
the msdos/sound directory held:

I'm posting instead of emailing because every time this comes up it tends to be
of wide interest.

It plays Macintosh format sound files through the PC speaker.

I got my copy from terminator.cc.umich.edu. Also on terminator are a bunch of
sound files in atari/sound/sounds. These apparently are Mac sound files with
the resource forks removed (or something like that). These files are preferable
to the ones found in some Mac archives because often times the latter are
binhexed and stuffed, which means you have to unstuff and unbinhex them before
you can use them and afterwards they still have the resource forks which remac
plays through the speaker along with the real sound data, causing a brief
crackle of noise at the end of each sound bite.

In short, this is an excellent package, and my hat is off to the author for
making it available. Rumor has it that he's working on a version which can be
incorporated into other programs. If this is true, I await it with bated
breath...

for anyone that is interested, mail to: komatsu@uhccux.uhcc.hawaii.edu
who is the moderator for a specific sound site (mainly REMAC and
PLAYMAC stuff) located (forgot) on the west coast somewhere. Expect a
response within 24 hours.

The site is ccb.ucsf.edu (128.218.1.13) and the directory is
something like /pub/Sound_list. There's a bunch of converted sounds there
along with REMAC and PLAYMAC and some other utilities.

Ted, is there a mailserver on terminator? I don't have ftp access, just
UUCP mail.
