[comp.sys.ibm.pc] High/Low density disk drive + SCSI problem

tgumleyle@cc.curtin.edu.au (Liam E. Gumley) (07/09/90)

I just installed a CDC 330M SCSI hard disk in my '386 tower, and it is
humming along without a problem.

However I am having trouble with the two floppy disk drives on the system.

I have a Chinon 1.2M/360K 5.25" and a Chinon 1.44M/720K 3.5" and they both
USED to work reliably at either density, with no software drivers installed
i.e. they sensed the media density and switched accordingly themselves.

Now, the drives will only work on the first density type that you use after
the system is booted. That is, you boot up, read a 1.2M disk, and henceforth
it will ONLY read 1.2M disks in that drive. If you try to read a 360K disk
you get
General failure error ...
The reverse is true if you read a 360K diskette first after bootup, and the
1.44M/720K drive acts in exactly the same way.

I first thought it might be the SCSI adapter (the CDC has a built-in SCSI
controller). The adapter is a 16 bit DTC3280A (Data Technology). However
a bit of fiddling with the DIP switches for floppy configuration did not
fix the problem.

I then tried installing some logical drives using the MSDOS 4.01 driver.sys
device driver, but had no luck.

So before I take the darn thing back to the dealer who installed the HD,
does anybody have any suggestions ???

Cheers,
Liam.
