[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Win 3 and Borland products

pajerek@usenet@kadsma (Don Pajerek) (07/10/90)

The recent reports from people who have been unable to get
Borland's language products to run under Windows 3.0 make me
wonder if the time has come for the PC industry to consider
organizing an effort to develop a non-proprietary, DOS-compatible
operating system. It is getting to the point where it may no
longer be acceptable for Microsoft - with its increasing
involvement in applications - to control the OS as well.

There are certainly precedents: look at OSF and EISA.

I wonder if the problems are related to the OS (Turbo C 2.0 works fine
for me under windows standard and enhanced) or to the hardware/bios
and add-in board combinations? I was amazed how many software problems
disappeared when I upgraded my Cordata 286 to a new bios - and elated
when they all disappeared when I junked my Cordata for a Zeos 386 (using
the same add-in boards).
