I am interested in any software that can assist in managing microcomputer labs. I imagine that many readers of this group have faced these problems before. We have both DOS and Mac labs. Mac side The Macs have access to CAP and the campus internet. On the Mac side we use the obvious things like removing the Chooser and Control Panel DAs. Locking the AppleShare prep. Install Vaccine etc. We tried Volume Image but it did not quite do what we needed. What would be good: - A method of implementing accounting and password access to printers from Macs. This would involve a CDEV, I guess. I think Apple should address the management side of PrintServer and AppleShare more. - The best way to manage hard disks on Macs. Is there some way of preventing write access to one section of the disk with the applictions. - I would really like some trap that mails me when one of the little darlings is trying to do bad deeds. (Like install SoundMaster, nVIR, WDEF or stealing the computer and other devilish things they come up with.) - If you have ever used SUM partition you could imagine a read-only option being implemented. (SUM is copywrited) DOS side The DOS pcs have ethernet with access to NFS volumes. - Much the same problems as the Mac only different. :-) - I would like software to implement a non-Dos partition with read only access except via password. I looked for the best news group(s) to post this and finally decided to post to two separately so that the follow ups from one interest group don't annoy others. I have posted this to comp.sys.mac and comp.sys.ibm.pc. You can mail me gris@surf.bu.oz.au or post depending on the content of your replies. Thanks in advance gris
