[comp.sys.ibm.pc] PC Accelerator cards

159628317@excalibur.UUCP (02/18/87)

Hello. I need some information about accelerator cards for an
IBM PC (original).

Basically, what I'm trying to decide is whether it's worth trading
in my old PC for an AT compatible, or rather buying an accelerator
board and installing it in the last of the 5 slots.

Can these boards be put in an original PC (5 slots, 64k motherboard)?
If so, what are some good boards? How well do they work, how much are
they and are they worth the money. Any notes, good or bad, would be
most appreciated. Please, e-mail only. I'll post a summary if I
receive enough responses. Thanks much.

ps- sorry if this topic has already been broached. I have been
    away for awhile.

I recently started doing a lot of work in C++ on my home computer. Now
that I use my XT-class machine as anything other than I dumb terminal, I
realize how slow it is.

So here's my dilemma:

I can get an AT clone machine for $700 or so. Or I could keep my
machine and use an accelerator card. The ones I know about are the
PC-Breakthru, the Tiny Turbo, and the Inboard/PC 386. I'm just a "poor
graduate student"(tm) so I'd like to get off for a little $$$ as
possible.

Has anybody out there had any experience with these types of cards? Are
they fairly robust? Is there a significant gain in performance over a
V20 8MHz PC/XT? Orchid seems to offer several different cards, is
there much of a difference? Any tips or traps would be most welcome.

Please Email, and I'll summarize if there is enough interest.

Thanks,
Bob
