In-Real-Life: David H. Olson @ Tektronix, Instrument Division ---------- The Key Grip is the head person in charge of the lighting. Since the main light is called the Key light and is the one on the "Star" of the flick, the grip or lighting crew head is called the Key Grip. His assistant (if I can remember the order correctly) is the Gaffer from whence comes the term Gaffer's tape by which movie and still photographers refer to duct tape. Third person on the totem pole is the Best Boy.

A grip is a stage hand, e.g. someone who moves props and scenary around. A key grip is probably some sort of don of the grips.
cfv@packet.UUCP (06/28/83)
I grip is a person whose job is moving and setting the lighting equiptment.
The key grip is the grip foreman.

Now that I think of it, What is a gaffer ? (if this has come up before, sorry, I just re-started reading this newsgroup.) Ben Walls cbosgd!bsw

In movie lingo a "Key Grip" is the person who is the main person (hence "key") in charge of hanging the lighting instruments from the light grid (hence "grip"). Mark Starner Penn State University {allegra, burdvax}!psuvax!starner

#R:tekid:-135200:uiuccsb:10000001:000:276 uiuccsb!leimkuhl Jun 29 11:44:00 1983 wrong. The key grip is the guy who makes sure all the details are taken care of. For example, if an actor is smoking a cigarette in a pair of short back-to-back scenes, the Key Grip makes certain that the cigarette doesn't get longer in the following scene.

References: tekecs.1503 The person who adjusts the lights, I believe.

I believe that you will find that while a grip is a lighting man a gaffer
is one of the people who handle stringing things from the ceiling like the
false roofs and the catwalks that the grips use.

What you describe is the person credited with "continuity". I suspect the key grip is a lighting perosn as the majority of other responses have suggested. -- Mark ...{decvax,ucbvax}!decwrl!qubix!msc ...{ittvax,amd70}!qubix!msc decwrl!qubix!msc@Berkeley.ARPA

The person who makes sure that things don't change from scene to scene isn't
the key grip, it is the continuity controller (I forget exactly what the
title is, but every screen credit will have at least one 'Continuity ...' on
it...

the person who makes sure that there aren't problems with (such as was said here - a cigarette longer in one scene than another) is the Continuity person and the Assistant Director. Mark Starner Penn State University {allegra, burdvax}!psuvax!starner

I can't keep quiet any longer! A key grip is in charge of rigging sets and lighting. The person in charge of seeing that details in a scene flow together in a proper manner is said to be in charge of continuity. So There!
bernie@watarts.UUCP (07/08/83)
Wrong again... you're confusing "Key Grip" with "continuity".
julian@osu-dbs.UUCP (07/19/83)
That's wrong also. A "grip" is a stagehand, someone who moves things around, like lights or scenery. A key grip is in charge of the grips. Scene to scene continuity is handled by a person who is dedicated to that very important task.
