Based on previous discussions on other newslists, service contracts for electronic equipment (and maintenance contracts for cars) are widely considered to be a waste of money. Consequently, I'm surprised to find that in the computer market, people consider such contracts (for on-site service) to be desirable. I'm interested in finding out whether this is really a useful benefit (i.e. a useful form of insurance), or whether it's just a successful propaganda scheme on the part of computer suppliers. If you or someone you know owns a home computer that came with an on-site service contract, please send me your impressions of the service. In particular, I'd like to know if you've found this service useful i.e. have you actually had the need to make use of it? How much do you estimate the service saved you in repair/shipping costs? How much do you estimate the service cost you? Comments are also welcome from people who didn't purchase the service and later wished they had. I'll summarize responses e-mailed to me if there's sufficient interest. Vipin. Vipin Swarup, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
