[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Is it possible to boot from drive B?

ejost@unix.cis.pitt.edu (Ernest J. Obusek) (07/11/90)

My PC has 2 floppy drives. A is a 5.25" 1.2M and B is a 3.5" 1.44M.
Is there some way in software to get the machine to boot from drive B?
I want to do this because I have Minix on 3.5" disks and need to boot with
them to get Minix running.

Thanks.

Ernest

I have finally found such a technique - open your machine, and swap the
connections on the floppy drives. This will turn drive B into drive A, and
now you can boot from it.

Pardon my ignorance, but I do not know either if you can do that with software.
If there's such a way, could some good soul also let me know, please, please?

Well, you can switch the cable (and reconfig. the drive table) or buy a new
controller card that will allow you to do that. July issues of Computer
Shopper page 459 has one advertised. Also page 499. It is the same product
call Compaticard. I do not know if this thing works but sound likes a good
idea to me (also supports up to 4 drive: 2 internal & 2 external OR all 4
internal! Boot from any drive! $129 Wow....)

It took me a while to find it, but here it is. There is a software solution
to booting from drive B:.

According the the Advisor in PC Magazine April 10, 1990:
..... your software option is B: Boot! ($19.90 plus $2 shipping and handling:
YWSoft, P.O. Box 2231, Bloomington, IN 47401; (812) 857-4772).

You stick the B:Boot! disk into drive A: and bootable DOS diskette into
drive B: and reboot the computer. B:Boot! forces the machine to boot from
the B: drvie, and from then on the machine recognizes the two drives as
reversed. B:Boot! is the only way to go if your games require that you
boot from the game diskette.

I have not personnally tried this program. I have only copied this text
from PC Magazine (without their permission).
