<> I was pleased to see mentioned one of my favourite bass players, Percy Jones, of Brand X. I consider him one of the great jazz electric bass players in the world (along with Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius). Are there any other Brand X fans out there? I realize that their music is not for everyone, but for anyone interested in fusion which is a bit experimental (but still has rhythm and melody), I recommend them. I particularly like the live album, Livestock. Oh, yes, for you Genesis fans, you probably already know this, but Phil Collins plays drums for them. (which is why I think he is probably the best rock drummer, just ahead of Bill Bruford). Speaking of fusion, I'm interested in finding more fusion music, particularly with a guitar/bass emphasis (e.g. I'm not that interested in Jeff Lorber). I know of Return to Forever, Al DiMeola, Billy Cobham's Glass Menagerie, some of Steve Khan's stuff, Brecker Bros., some Tom Scott, Brand X, the Dregs (sort of fusion), Miles. Any other favourites? By the way, Journey fans might be interested in Steve Smith's new album, which is straight jazz fusion, and very good at that. He has Mike Stern (great!!), from Miles' band, and Dean Brown (from Billy Cobham's band) on guitars, with Tim Landers on bass (also Billy Cobham) and Dave(?) Wilczienski (sp?) on sax. Unfortunately, if that recent ominous report about Jones and Keef Emerson is so, you won't get to hear much more of Percy Jones playing with a guitarist named Bill Frisell. There's an album of Frisell's stuff out onECM, (I don't remember whether that's stuff that Jones is on or not)-the backup band was called Stone Tiger. My impression is that since both Jones and Frisell had a really idiosyncratic approach their instruments, they worked together quite well-not so much an orgy of riff-trading as this continual sense of redefinition of who was doing what. gtaylor
