[net.movies] Speaking of Casino Royale...

...it was just announce on the news (radio, not net) that
David Niven has died.

...and what a sad thing that is, too. Pretty soon, we won't have any
more actors who read widely, write well, and think for themselves.
David Niven is one of my all-time heroes (he played Phileas Fogg to
a T in "Around the World in 80 Days", to mention just one of his
brilliant and faithful performances).

This is perhaps an improper place to mourn a person, but I too shall
miss David Niven. His classic style (he really only knew how to play
David Niven, but he did it SO well). He brought life to films like
CASINO ROYALE, the original PINK PANTHER, and was a great character
in films like THE BISHOP'S WIFE or MURDER BY DEATH. He was witty,
calm and always VERY Brittish. He shall be missed.

I will also miss David Niven. For those who have not yet read his
book 'The Moon Is A Baloon', I recommend that they do. It is his
autobiography and contains some of the best humor I have ever read.

Re: Casino Royale & David Niven

...he had a truly great throw-away line in that flick: at one point
they're either setting or defusing a bomb (can't remember) and Niven
says "Careful with that--it's lysergic acid--very explosive..."

At the time the movie was made, LSD was not yet illegal, at least not
in California.

Re: David Niven & The Bishop's Wife

Sorry to go on like this...my father was a stunt man of sorts in this
film, standing in for Cary Grant in the skating scene (they put some
sort of Cary-mask on him, 'cuz he really doesn't look much like Grant).

His comment on Niven was, simply, that he was David Niven, and what more
could you say? Well, so he isn't the most articulate man in the world.
