Hi folks, I posted the original note on this subject about a month ago. It has taken me that long to confirm the solution to this problem. For those of you who didn't read the original note, I was having trouble running my 286 with protected mode programs (i.e. Windows 3.0 running in standard mode). The symptom was lose of characters while running Excel (which runs in protected mode). I had to replace two things to get my 286 system, which has an Everex EV-1800 motherboard, to work properly. They were: 1. New keyboard BIOS. Getting this part turned out to be a real challenge. I assume this is because I live in Boise, ID which isn't close to any major cities. I finally found a dealer in town who sold Everex machines and he ordered the part. He gave it to me at his cost which was about $30. The old keyboard BIOS was Rev. 5 and the latest keyboard BIOS for the EV-1800 is Rev. 9. Unfortunately, this did not completely solve my problem when I plugged the new part in; however, I was loosing far fewer characters. 2. I also found the old keyboard I had isn't quite compatable. After plugging in a new keyboard (a Northgate 102-key enhanced keyboard), the rest of my problems went away. I suspect the old keyboard didn't hold off transmitting a scan code to the computer when it was told to wait. Anyway, thanks to all the users who gave me suggestions on how to solve this problem. Now if only Daybook would stop locking up the system when I have the wallpaper set to 'chess.bmp'...
