[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Hanging it at 25MHz!!

tmbernat@shine3.waterloo.edu () (11/03/90)

I recently purchased a clone 386-25MHz, with 1Mb (hey, only a poor student!),
and I run into weird things with it. When running programs I wrote in TC++
the damn thing likes to hang on me. This never happens at 8Mhz.

Has anyone else ever had a problem like this? I didn't buy a 25MHz machine to
run it at 1/3 speed! The dealer won't help me. Is it a 'wait state' problem?

Also, I want to run UNIX on my machine, can anyone tell me what's good, I hear
a lot about MINIX, SCO XENIX, Coherent, etc. Anyone actually using these?

Thanx Netters,
Trace

It does definitely sound like your computer is running into timing problems.
Usually this is because you have slow memory chips. Make sure that you system
has at least 80ns chips (or 100ns if you have high speed cache on board).
If you have slower than 80ns, the system will hang; whether you have 1 or 2
wait states. To tell, you can just look at the memory chips, the trailing
digits will tell you the speed that they are rated at.
