[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Archive tape units

A friend of mine has offered me an Archive tape backup unit (40Mb) for my
PC, but after looking at the software, it seems very weak.  For instance,
there is no way (with the software provided) to print a listing of what's
on the tape.

My questions are:  1) Is Archive a good brand of tape drive?
                   2) Are there programs other than the software provided
                      with the unit that support the Archive (and are
                      better than the software provided with the unit)?
                   3) Is there anything else I should know about Archives,
                      or tape backup units in general?  Any recommendations?
