I would appreciate pointers to generic programs to package up the contents of a PC's hard disk and 'put' the result to a UNIX system via ftp. A corresponding capability to restore is, of course, also necessary. I say 'generic' because we have a variety of ftp packages and ethernet cards and I would like a common program to distribute to people. Ideally someone has something like 'pkzip | ftp' -- I know this won't quite work as is, but you get the idea. What you want is a tar program with compression. Tar programs are included with our PC/TCP and Sun's Lifeline (a PC-NFS option package). (I don't know whether or not tar is implemented in Beame & Whiteside's package, or in Wollongong's, or in...) I don't know whether or not Sun's tar can compress files - ours does. When writing to a tape, our tar uses rsh or rexec to execute mt on the remote system, but it can also write to a file on the remote machine. I imagine other implementations are similar. -- Frances Kirk Selkirk info@ftp.com (617) 246-0900 FTP Software, Inc. 26 Princess Street, Wakefield, MA 01880
