[net.music] klezmer

Anybody out there know how I can get my hands on real-live klezmer
music instead of the reconstituted modern stuff? The new recordings
just don't seem to have the heart that the old ones do. (You can hear
them on the radio now and then, I don't own any.)

I have Klezmorim, KCB, and Andy Statman, I want David Tarras and the
cast of thousands who were grownups before 1950.

I love those crying screaming clarinets and trumpets!

In reply to Andy T.'s request for genuine klezmer music:
I know of 2 collections of old recordings that have been released in the
last couple of years. There is no overlap between them, and both of them
are excellent - lots of good music from such folks as Abe Schwartz and
Naftule Brandwine, and well annotated.

1) Klezmer Music 1910-1942 from the YIVO Archives
compiled and annotated by Henry Sapoznik (who is a member of
Kapelye, a NY-based klezmer group, and also plays old-time
5-string banjo - he was a member of the Delaware Water Gap String
	 Band)
	Folkways FSS34021

2) Klezmer Music - The First Recordings 1910-1927
from the collection of Dr. Martin Schwartz (who lives here in Berkeley)
Folklyric 9084 (Folklyric is the ethnic label of Arhoolie Records)

Both of these records should be obtainable at a decent record store, or
can be ordered by mail from such places as Roundup Records in Somerville,
Mass (which was discussed in net.music recently) or Down Home Records
in El Cerrito, Ca.

I have seen a Dave Tarras record (recorded in the 50's I think) in the bins
at Down Home Records, but the price was steep, which leads me to believe
it was out of print or was a special pressing.

By the way, in June there will be a Klezmer music camp in New York state;
I saw a brochure and it looks interesting: taught by members of Kapelye,
Ruth Rubin, some old-timers, and others.
