[net.movies] Answer to Rollerball Music Question

dragon@uw-june (Brian Matthews) (09/16/83)

Well, I've received a number of replies to my question of what the pipe
organ music in Rollerball was. I'd like to thank everbody who replied,
even the few who chastised me for not knowing the answer. All I can say
is, I'm sorry, but I've never been heavily into classical music.

Anyway, the music is "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" by J.S. Bach. A
number of people figured this, even though they evidently hadn't seen
Rollerball, just from my (rather poor) description, and that this
piece of music seems to be used quite often in television and movies.

For those of you who need to know even more than this, here is an excerpt
from a reply by Dave Seifert:

Everything you didn't want to know about the soundtrack to "Rollerball"

The record is United Artists UA-LA470-G

London Symphony Orchestra
Conducted by Andre Previn
Organ Soloist - Simon Preston

Toccata in D Minor / Bach
Symphony No. 8 / Shostakovich excerpt first movement
Executive Party / Andre Previn
Symphony No. 5 / Shostakovich excerpt third movement
Adagio / Albinoni / Giazotto
Waltz from "Sleeping Beauty" / Tchaikovsky
Executive Party Dance / Andre Previn
Symphony No. 5 / Shostakovich excerpt fourth movement

The opening organ music is the Toccata by Bach. I bought the album
because I remembered how much I liked the opening music in the movie.
(if it sounds good on a 2" TV speaker, think what it will sound
like on a *real* audio system) I was not dissappointed. The album
is excellent. Do not be mislead by the fact that its the soundtrack
to a strange movie. The "Executive Party" pieces have an upbeat
jazzy style which adds a nice variety to the album.

BTW, the set for the opening of the movie is the BMW museum in Munich.

Thanks Dave, now I'm sure everyone out there in net land can rest easier
knowing this!!!

Again, thanks to everyone who took the time to answer. I appreciate it.
