[comp.sys.att] 6300 mouse and QuickBasic

heiby@mcdchg.UUCP (05/01/87)

I have an early PC 6300 that has been upgraded to 1.43 PROMS and MS-DOS 3.2.
I have an early 6300 mouse (the kind that plugs into the keyboard). With
it, came an upgrade chip for inside the keyboard, which I installed. The
mouse software claims, I believe, to be 1.0.

I've used the mouse successfully with a couple of pieces of software,
including a version of MS-Windows for the 6300 and the PC-Layers software
(neither of which I use any longer).

When I try to use the mouse in QuickBasic, the mouse cursor moves around
ok, but garbage characters are input into the window, as well. Is there
some dumb configuration option I need to use? Or, do I have an obsolete
set of mouse software? Or, should I just go out and plunk down $100 on
a real Microsoft Mouse? (And, is the Microsoft Bus mouse ok in the 6300?)

Thanks a bunch.

I don't know about configuring your AT&T (actually Logi-) mouse, but I've
been using a Microsoft Bus Mouse V5.03 on my 6300 for over 6 months with no
problems whatsoever. PC-Paint and Menu (a program that allows you to create
mouse interfaces for programs that don't support a mouse) also work.

I polled the net right before I bought it and the consensus seemed to be
the best mouse to use was the Logimouse C7 (available only in the serial
version then), with MS Mouse running a close second. Since I didn't want
to give up my serial port, I opted for the MS Mouse. Logitech has since
come out with a bus version of the C7. I don't know anything about it, but
it might be worth checking into.

As far as I know, you are out of luck with the AT&T mouse. It is a funny
situation where Microsoft is one of the few companies that can not write
code compatable with all "Microsoft Compat Mice". If they get enough
complaints, perhaps the upgrade may fix the situation. (As it did with their
windows upgrade.)
