[comp.sys.att] Shipping a 3b/2

rcj1@ihlpf.ATT.COM (Guess, again turkey) (05/08/87)

We will be shipping a 3B/2 next week via UPS I think.

Is there a procedure when powering down the unit, such
that the heads wind up in a safe area?

We need to be sure that the unit will come back up
	safely and in working order.

			Thanks,

32 Meg disks (and maybe others??) have a mechanical head lock. On
the back of the drive (the end with the connectors), there is a small
piece of metal that looks some thing like

-----------
        O |
-----------

(The "O" indicates a hole.) It is approximately 1/4" wide and 1/16"
thick. If it is pulled out from the drive about 1/2" the heads are
mechanically locked in a safe position. This is very important.
We were recently shipped a 3B2/400 with two disks. The heads
were not locked and the package was dropped during shipment. Both
disks were destroyed.
