[comp.sys.att] Switching caps lock and control keys

Instead of using software, which must be provided in every opsys (I have a
6300+), you can do a simple hardware fix. Remove the back of the keyboard
with the connector and cable toward you. There are four jumpers in the
upper left corner. Cut the first and third and cross them over by attaching
short wires to the cut ends. Do not heat too long while soldering, else the
ends of the wires could fall out of the PC board, in which case you must remove
the top cover, which is a real pain! (Or try to shake the pieces out.)

       before                 after
     o  o  o  o             o  o  o  o
     |  |  |  |              \ | /   |
     |  |  |  |               \|/    |        View from bottom of keyboard.
     |  |  |  |               /|\    |
     |  |  |  |              / | \   |
     o  o  o  o             o  o  o  o

Then put labels on the exchanged keys.  The old Caps Lock light still works;
it just happens to be on the wrong key now. On my 1st keyboard I actually
removed the top and put in new jumpers. That keyboard failed; I got a new
one and did the above. The serviceman said that the keyboard might not
even get fixed. I wonder if it ended up in one of the sale computers :-) .
