[comp.sys.att] Cheapest 7300 I've Seen Yet!

cmv@ihuxz.UUCP (06/15/87)

Hang on to your hats folks...

In this Sunday's Chicago Tribune, on the back page of "The Arts" section (#13)
appears an ad for the AT&T Unix-pc for $785.00. According to the ad, this
includes 1MB RAM and a 20 MB Hard disk. It does not appear to include version
3.5 of the operating system which you can get from them for a mere $210.00. I
do not know if you get any software with it (like maybe the 3.0 O.S.) but if
you're looking for a good deal on the hardware, this is the best I've seen!

The company's stats are:

	Elek-Tek, Inc.
	6557 North Lincoln Av.
	Lincolnwood IL 60645

	Orders and Info. (312)677-7660

For all those (myself included) that already have one:

Yes, but what they don't tell you there is that you have to buy UN*X on
top of that (thus add ~$200 to that price).

Of course you have to pay for Unix on top of that. If you buy a PC clone
for say $700 you have to pay for MS-DOS or steal it. Lets look at a PC
clone compared to the Unix PC.

First lets add up the cost of the equipment that doesn't come with a clone.

	Modem ~$150.00
	Montor ~110.00
	20 Meg Hard disk ~250.00
	Ports ~75.00
	Graphics Card ~95.00
	384K Ram ~70.00
			-------
			 ~750.00

This is all the stuff that comes standard with the Unix PC. So compared
to a PC clone it makes the system cost only $56.00. And if that is not
a good enough deal for you AT&T is giving a $100-200 rebate on top of that.
Which makes the cost -$44.00. I will buy PC clones all day at that
price :-). Yep, leave it up to AT&T to try to pull something over on you
by not telling you that you have to buy Unix. Of course the utility set
also cost about $350.00 but it includes vi, ksh, C compiler, lint, sdb,
lex, and yacc plus much more. Try to buy that for a clone for the same
price.

I have no love for AT&T and firmly beleive that the saving grace for
the Unix PC is that it was built for AT&T by CT.
