[comp.sys.att] Using a 3B1 as a Starlan file server

paul@cgh.UUCP (Paul Homchick) (07/19/87)

With the price of all things (AT&T && micro) currently being extremely
attractive, I'm thinking of setting up a STARLAN network for our small
consulting company.

We need to be able to run LOTUS, SuperCalc, WordStar, Ventura Publisher,
Clipper, and the like, so I need MS-DOS machines. But I also want to be
able to share files, use electronic mail, and support secure remote
logins for file transfers. A Unix machine is good for those tasks.

I'd like to buy a full-bore 3B1 and make it the file-server on a STARLAN
network with the nodes consisting of 6300 and 6300+ machines (or perhaps
some AT-type clones to plan for OS/2 support in the far future). This
would allow people in the office to use MS-DOS software but still share
data files.

Additionally, there is supposed to be a software package called
Unix-Access that allows users of the node machines to hit a 'hot key'
(getting very hazy here) to log into the 3B1 using the node machine as a
terminal and network connection to access the unix machine as if you
were hooked up via a normal serial line. This would allow using mail,
SCCS, and the 3B1 modem from any of the nodes. Such an arrangement
sounds very attractive.

So, a few questions for the AT&T system integration gurus...

1) Is this possible with the 3B1?

2) If so, what hardware and software would be required?

3) Does anyone have any experience with such an network? If so,
   any caveats?

Thanks!
