[comp.sys.att] 7300 floppies

I have wondered for a long time whether it might be possible to
plug in a 96 TPI floppy drive. The capabilities of the "iv" program
give the impression that the system might allow 96 TPI and maybe
even high density. I borrowed a diskette drive from an Altos 2086
which manages to read and write 40 and 96 TPI floppies at normal
and high density. Sadly, although the drive steps 80 times during
the format, I get surface check errors that I can't get rid of.
I find this very curious because the only thing that appears fixed
is the gap settings...and those aren't varied on the Altos whether
at 48 or 96 TPI.
I wonder if anyone else has had better results?
