[comp.sys.att] R2.5 Dialer PC 6300 PLUS

bill@ssbn.UUCP (Bill Kennedy) (08/06/87)

I have observed an anomaly (one of several) in the new r2.5 UNIX for the
PC 6300 PLUS and I'd like some help with it if anyone knows. I have two
modems on it, a Courier 2400 on tty1 and a Hayes 1200 on ttym2. They are
in the Devices file as ACU's with the appropriate baud rates. If a site
in the Systems file has more than one line, each at its own baud rate
uucp will use the first line it finds and if it isn't successful, it will
continue with as many others as it can find for that site until it runs
out of lines or succeeds. I noticed, before I put the second modem on that
it would dial a 1200bps number at 2400 baud. The modems figured it out
but uucico failed because he was at 2400. Since I had the baud rate in the
Devices file as "Any" and there was only one modem I just commented out the
1200bps entry in Systems. I figured that it neglected to change the baud
rate when it dialed the second line. The old dialer worked perfectly, if
Systems said 1200 it used it, regardless of how many different entries there
were in Systems.

Today when I brought up the other modem it did the same thing but this time
it dialed the modem that is in Devices at 1200 with a 2400 dial string. The
1200 modem is really a Hayes SM 2400 (piece of junk at 2400bps, good at 1200)
so I saw the HS light come on when it dialed. Within moments of that (after
I powered the modem down to make uucico fail) it picked up another site that
is 1200bps only and dialed it correctly on the correct port. The improved
modem control in r2.5 is nice, but the other problems are a real nuisance.
Has anyone seen what I just described? If so, can anyone suggest what I
might do to get around it? The two Systems file lines are one right after
the other, do you think I should separate them by another site? I'd sure
appreciate any observations you might have.
