[comp.sys.att] herc card in 6300?

gsk@khaki (09/15/87)

i know this has been discussed here before,
but i wasn't interested then!

i want to add a hercules or clone board to my 6300.
it must coexist with the stock AT&T video controller
that's already installed there.

i would like tips from people who have successfully done it.
please include sources for boards and monitors and
notes about any potential problems.

thanks.

I have used the original style hercules monochrome graphics card in
the AT&T 6300 with no problems. I don't know how easily the newer
type RAM-FONT and color herc cards can be integrated with the 6300,
however.

The "classic" style herc card dosen't have a BIOS ROM for graphics
calls, thus there is nothing to interfere with the built-in video
ROM BIOS that is already on the 6300 motherboard. The net result
is that all text will defualt to the 6300's original monitor, while
graphics are done on the herc display. This is very nice for LOTUS
1-2-3.

I have used both real and clones of the herc card. Picking a
monitor is pretty much a matter of personal taste. Just about any
IBM MDA-compatible monitor will do the job nicely. The rule of "you
get what you pay for" applies. I've had problems with el-cheepo
under $100 monitors not holding up well under heavy use.

Note that you **don't** need to have the version 1.43 firware to
use a herc card; any version will do.
