[comp.sys.att] Getting my 7300 cranked up ...

neanders@phoenix.PRINCETON.EDU (Nels Anderson) (09/29/87)

I just purchased a vanilla 7300, no software, from a dealer who was dumping
them (couldn't resist the price!). I have some unresolved questions I need
to know in order to make it do anything.

1) Where do I buy software and hardware for this thing, and how do I find
    out what is available?

2) It came with 2.0, no manuals, and no backup floppies. How much does the
latest os cost and is it worth it? (Hint: I am a poor, starving grad
    student.)

3) How do I create boot floppies in case my hard disk gets nuked? I
already backed it up with "cpio -cBo / > /dev/fp021" but those probably
    won't boot.

4) If I make a floppy with a "loader" on it, what is it supposed to do?
I tried it and all it did when I booted with the floppy in the drive was
print garbage all over the screen.

5) Free literature states that the floppy is double density, but it only
holds 320K. If "iv" is used with mixed density, then "iv -t" states
that the floppy is now double density, but it still holds only 320K.
    What's the story?

6) I have a cross compiler which I would like to use for this thing. It
    calls kernel routines like so:

	move.w dispatch-number, d0
	trap #0

What does the 7300 do, if not this?

7) Could someone send me a list of the kernel calls and their dispatch
numbers? I also need the "a.out.h" file and the files that it
#includes. I got the "a.out.h" from ATT over the phone, but not the
    other #includes that it includes.

8) To entertain myself, I have embarked on the project of totally removing
the Office Automation Software. Has anyone else done this?

Thanks x 10^6,
