I'd appreciate a little help on a problem with a 3b1. I have 3.5 MB on one of these little jewels (sic), and I'd like to have the kernal use a little more of this memory for system buffers. The manual says to use ktune(7) -- fine. Just about everything seems to get smaller after I reboot, tho. I called the hotline. They tell me that I have 57K to play with, so trying to tell the kernal to use 500 buffers (at 1K each) is ridiculous. I can have at most 157. OK, I set nbuf to 150. After rebooting, ktune -d reported: KTUNE DEFAULT nbuf 112 100 ninode 300 400 nfile 225 300 nproc 75 100 ntext 56 75 nclist 112 150 npbuf 12 16 ncall 24 32 What's the deal? Can anyone help with this, or offer any (useful :-) suggestions? The machine is useable as is, but it seems I should see a fairly large improvement in speed if I could just increase the number of system buffers, and I have the memory to support it. Oh, I'm running 3.5.1.3. I'd be running 3.51, but we haven't received our new Development Kit yet. As always, any help would be greatly appreciated. -- !pur-ee!pur-phy!mrstve!rjk Rich Kuhns {ihnp4, decvax, etc...} !itivax!mrstve!rjk
