[comp.sys.att] Would I need a service contract for my 3B1?

riddle@woton.UUCP (11/20/87)

I'm still debating buying a UNIX PC for my home. Thanks to the net, I
now know that I can protect a machine from being fried by flaky power
for about $500 by buying a UPS.

But I have another question: do those of you who have home 3B1s think
it advisable or necessary to buy a service contract for them? I
confess I'm worried by all the talk about overheating power supplies,
suicidal motherboards etc. (plus our own experiences here -- it seems
like one or more of our ~20 3B1s is almost always sick). On the other
hand, I don't know if I want to commit to chunking out X number of
dollars a month to AT&T for the life of the machine. (I believe that
the cheapest sort of contract you can get, one which covers advice and
parts but which requires you to do the labor yourself, goes for about
$50/month).

So, what do you think? Please send short simple answers to me and I'll
summarize, or post longer items of general interest directly to the
net. Thanks.
