[comp.sys.att] Upgrading my 6300

mrk@gvgspd.UUCP (Michael R. Kesti) (11/23/87)

I run a color AT&T 6300 with 640K on the motherboard, a V30 installed, and
an externally mounted Seagate ST225 controlled by a Western Digital WX2.
No other boards are installed and both floppy drives are in the system.

The ROMs are marked version 1.00 and I run DOS version 2.11. It has come
time to upgrade both of these, and I have a few questions:

	1) I believe the current ROM version is 1.43. Is this correct?

	2) Do the new ROMs change the function of the dipswitches or
anything else of which I should be aware?

	3) What (and I figure this to be subject to opinion!) is the best
DOS version to use? Note that I would prefer to stick with an
AT&T release, rather that a generic version.

	4) I don't mind, and would prefer, to completely backup my hard
disk, reformat with the new DOS, and then restore from the
backup. Will the new DOS's RESTORE read 2.11's BACKUP?

	5) What else should I know?

Some of these questions may get answered by the arrival of the AT&T catalog
I requested recently, but until then, I thought I would ask. PLEASE use
e-mail, and I will summarize.

				Michael

Most are the same - such as the standard hard disks - there are some
additions, but I think it's all documented.

AT&T 3.2 - it understands the 6300 clock (even if it does run slow -
I have the patch to fix this)

It worked for me !

The 1.43 ROM upgrade is about $35 - not sure on the DOS 3.2 price.

I use machines with ROM versions 1.0 (at work), 1.21 (at home), 1.43
(at work) and all work the 'same'. The 1.0 ROM release won't run
some of Hayes communications software, but it does all else that
I've asked of it.

I posted instead of mailed because there's a system in the path that
can't handle a mail path with a "@" in it.
