[comp.sys.att] 2nd hard disk in 6300+

pete@tsc.UUCP (Pete Schmitt) (12/01/87)

I would like to install a 2nd hard disk in my plus and would like
to get some recommendations. Preferably I would like a hard disk card
with about 20-30Meg capacity. I want to run UNIX on one disk and
MS-DOS on the other. Has anyone had experience with this? Any
recommendations? My configuration now is the original 20M hard disk
and a 1.2M floppy with 1M of RAM.

We have tried putting a hard card in a 63+ and have had troubles
with the hard card controller being incompatible with the resident
controller card. On my system I install a 2nd 20 megabit hard disk
Because of the percevied problems I purchased a Segate st225 drive,
which is the also the same model of the original drive. I wanted to be
able to run Unix on part of the first disk, and Dos on the 2nd hard
disk. It all works find. I did not have to put any jumpers on the
controller card or change any switch settings on the mother board.
The 2nd hard disk is controlled by the original controller card,
WD 1002s-wx2. The 2nd hard disk came with a WD 1002s-wx2a card, which
had its own rom bios on the card. When I first installed the 2nd hard
disk and booted up the machine it saw that there were 2 disk but would
give me an "invalid drive spec" when I called for a "d" drive. What I
finally did was to replace the original controller card with the card
that came with the disk, changed the switch setting on the mother board
tellint it to use the rom bios on the controller card, and left the
original hard drive disconnected, and made the new drive "c" drive. I
was then able to format the new drive. I then put the system back to
the original state, connected the new drive as "d" drive and it all
work! I forgot to mention that the resistor chip must be removed from
the "c" drive and left in the "d" drive, also the jumper on the back of
the "d" drive must be moved to the 2nd position, instruction for the
resistor and jumper came with the drive. By the way I moved the
controller card over to the far left and placed a piece of cardboard
under the 2nd harddisk held on by rubber bands, and put the 2nd hard
disk in the machine, looks and works good.
