[net.movies] Rope and Pleasure At Her Majesty's

Rope

Hitchcock wasn't satisfied that this was his first colour film and that it
was to be shot in real time as a continuous (sort of) take. He shot the
whole thing on a soundstage, and set the play so that night fell as the film
progressed, i.e. the sky got darker and finally became black by the film's end.
The challenge for the special effects people was that there was no outside.
They made a fake sky, a fake skyline, and fake cotton clouds floating by.
They adjusted the lighting of the fake sky to make it darken properly, and
had little fake stars come out as night happened. If the rest of the film is
as uninspired as some say it is, the view out the window may be the most
exciting part...

Pleasure At Her Majesty's

It wasn't that great, but I didn't think it was horrible, either...
For the record, the "Norwich" sketch was done by Alan Bennett, not Jonathan
Miller. Bennett, Miller and Peter Cook are 75% of the Beyond the Fringe
people, the remaining quarter being a rather well-known actor, pianist
and person who mucks about with Susan Anton...
