I went to a Christmas party that was held by JFM Business Systems here in Chicago about 2 weeks before Christmas. There were door prizes given away such as a fortune 16:32 system, a 6300 plus, a IBM ps2 and a Data General One-model 2. Guess who won the DG-1? I did! Well i got the thing home and realized what a slow box it was and how useless it was for me. I called them back and talked to the salesman about trading it in for a 3b2. He said that he would have to talk to Morris the owner about it and that I would have to wait until after the 1st of the year. I waited and then called him back. He said I would have to talk to Morris and that to call back tomorrow. I did and did get to talk to Morris ( who was very short and curt i might add) and he said no problem. Bring in the DG-1 and let them check it out and they would trade me a 3b1 with a 20 meg HD and that I would have to pay $500.00 for the OS. I thought it sounded fishy so I talked to the salesman again and asked if he would check to see if the OS (unix) was not supposed to come with the box. This occured wednesday when i brought the DG-1 in for "inspection". The salesman told me that the technicians were "prepping" my 3b1 and that I would have to come back Friday to pick it up. I called friday and the salesan was out so I left a message. The owner called me back and asked me about my inquiry into the OS coming with the package. He claimed that I had said that I had called AT&T about it and that now he is "cancelling my award". Who would think that a company that sells AT&T 3b2/400 and 600's as well as having a staff of over 15 people, 3 techs, and numerous secretarial types would be that low. I have been contemplating what action I should take next. Being in the TV broadcast business I could cash in on some favors with the local network boys but I really don't want to do that. I am just wondering what AT&T would do if they found out just how rotten this dealer really is. I am a good customer of AT&T products and really beleive in them. Too bad they cannot screen their dealers as closley as they do their product line. Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I claim it on my household insurance? Should I call the state's attorney? Call the local network news types? Picket the premisis? All I really want is a 3b1. rich andrews

What I was told, (from a super-VAR, those businesses that sell to VAR's and deal directly with AT&T) is that AT&T will not ship a 7300 or 3B1 without an accompanying order for Unix 3.xx. The clincher to this is that they are completely separate items and you have to add the price of the two to get the 'real' price of a Unix PC. As for dealers that are hard to get a hold of, I always sympathize with the dealer. We've brought 350 AT&T CPU's onto our campus since last May with a professional staff of 3 and a handfull of students (bringing the total number of AT&T CPU's up to about 700). You don't know how hard it is to deal with AT&T until you've had to support hundreds of their items. My favorite days were when a hotline person told me tighten the ribbon on a 495 LASER printer, and when I called in and got a Starlan EGA bug fix that was so old it should have shipped with the software we bought (fix was dated 1986, this was Sept. 1987). Another perfect example is the brain-dead uucp that came with my 7300. Yuck !!! Frank McGee Microcomputer Support Specialist Bradley University Peoria, Ill. 61625
