[net.music] re;progressive Progressive seems to have several possible meanings. One refers to that

psuvm%d3u@psuvax.UUCP (05/18/84)

which is obviously new. Another refers to being more complex, original, or what
ever, than ordinary. For rock the ordinary consists of most Top 40 and standard
formulas in the music. Yes, Genesis, etc. are progressive in that they try to
not mimic the other stuff on Top 40 (well, Genesis does seem to be doing this
these days) and are sometimes more advanced in music theory. "New Wave" will
soon have a similar crisis; it's been around several years.
Maybe instead of Progressive, call it Art Rock.
I would like to recommend Gentle Giant. They are no longer around but are
even more classical than Yes and ELP. Or, early Tangerine Dream is even more so
and is much spacier. "Inventions for Electric Guitar" by Manuel Gottsching (Ash
Ra TEmpel) is a classical approach to rock that doesn't try to use classical
themes as do Yes & ELP.
And there are the Residents and Throbbing Gristle who are even harder for
most people to listen to. The Residents have been around for a while,TG too.
SO, WHERE IS THE REALLY NEW MUSIC? And not just the stuff that's is progres
to those who haven't heard it even though it's been around a long time?
Please don't get me wrong-- all the bands mentioned are good-Yes,TG,etc.
But I do want to make a point. I am also wondering where the real innovators
are these days, simply because I want to hear them.
                             Progressively(reactionarily?)
                                 The Cosmic Ray
P.S. Keep searcning those imports and independent labels.
