Some of us are just a little strange, I guess... My favorite movie, or at least the one I've gone to see the most, is "Harold and Maude". It's a great comedy flick that also carries a message. The basic story is about a teenager (Harold) who lives with his mother in an impressive California mansion. His mother is so entangled in her upper crust social life that she shows no love for her son. In an effort to get his mother's attention, Harold fakes suicides in front of her. As a result of his depression, Harold also attends funerals in his spare time. It's at these funerals that he meets someone with the same morbid hobby; Maude. Now you may be thinking, "What's redeeming about a movie that dwells on death". Well, after watching it, you will realize that the movie is really all about life and why it's worth living. The highlights of "Harold and Maude" are: - The suicides. The way their staged is hilarious. - How his mother decides to deal with them. - The directing and cinematography. It's top notch. - The music. All from Cat Steven's "Tea for the Tillerman". (I think the songs were written for the movie.) - The actors. Harold: Bud Court, Maude: Ruth Gordon, and his mother: Vivian Pickles. The movie was made in the early seventies and has become a cult film. It's been playing at theatres across the country ever since it's conception. If you know of a theatre that show "Rocky Horror", chances are good that it also shows "Harold and Maude". The next time you are in your local video store looking for something to rent try this one. You won't be disappointed. Sorry for the hard-sell folks...
