[comp.sys.att] UNIX PC won't boot

david@varian.UUCP (David Brown) (05/21/88)

This has probably been discussed before, but I've never had access
to UNIX PC's before, but now I'm responsible for a half dozen of
them.

I have a UNIX PC (20mb, running System 3.5) that was working fine
until I tried moving it - I ran the diagnostic disk, checked the
hard drive, and parked the heads. After getting it to the new
location, I can't get it to boot - when I turn on the power, I
hear the hard disk spinning up, and it tries to read the floppy,
but then nothing happens - the floppy drive light stays on (if
the diagnostic disk is inserted, it just spins it), and I get
little boxes on the screen every few seconds. Also, the 4 lights
that are visible through the case on the left side do a bit of
a dance and then all 4 stay on (actually, I can't tell if the yellow
is on or just reflecting the light from the others).

Can anyone give me any hints of what to do? If I open the case,
is there anything specific I should check (my guess is something
came loose). Does anyone know what the four lights mean (or
tell me where they're documented)?

Thanks in advance

The little boxes in the upper left corner of the screen indicate that
the boot ROM is waiting on hard disk or floppy disk ready. Evidently
it is getting neither. I would open the machine and reseat all cables
and ICs that are in sockets. Do not attempt to boot first, just try to
get the diagnostics up first
