A while back, someone was offering a complete version of TeX which had
been ported to the 3b1. If my memory serves, this included a
previewer and a bunch of printers supported, including Epsons,
Imagewriters, etc. I would be grateful for any information about
this.

I have also generated a previewer based on Nelson Beebe's dvi drivers and a texview program posted to the net a while back. This version of the previewer uses either the pk, gf, or pxl format fonts and attempts to substitute something reasonable when a particular font can't be found. I currently only use the pk format (for obvious disk space reasons). I have also ported the previewer to a Sun 3, but it needs a bit more work before I would consider it usable and friendly. The user can see approximately half of a page when using the UNIX/PC version and an entire page when using the SUN version. Of course commands exist to move the page around on the screen to view hidden parts. I imagine that a few (if not a lot) of those on the net with UNIX/PCs would like a copy of this. The problem I have is that the C version of TeX source, previewer source, etc consumes 7 Meg of disk space (uncompressed) while the macros and 5 magnifications of the computer modern font set (in pk format) takes another 4 Megs. The executable of the previewer and virtex take about a half a Meg. I never got an undump to work on the UNIX/PC so my call to tex or latex is simply a shell script that calls virtex and loads the appropriate format file. I am looking for suggestions on how to get this info into interested party's hands. I don't really want to have to handle hundreds of floppies from people and my only phone line into my machine is also my home voice line (anyone want to donate another line :-) ). I think posting the source and everything else necessary to make it work would be unworkable?. I'll listen for suggestions for about a week before deciding how to proceed. The base for the metafont generation was calculated from the 3b1 monitor specs. The TeX port is not up on FTP at noether.sunysb.edu because Mark is on vacation in Italy until September. I do have his copies of diskettes, although I haven't had the chance to even copy them for myself. Like Gary said, TeX is big, and at icus disk space is quite limited lately. I would check with Edward L. Hepler (elh@vu-vlsi.UUCP) since he was making it available for users a while ago if you mailed him the disks, $10 preparation fee, etc... If this fails, I might be able to work something similar... If anyone could get a copy of the package to me, i could make it available for anonymous FTP at site ux.acss.umn.edu [128.101.63.2]. Is anonymous FTP useful to any decent number of Unix-pc users? Reply to me via E-mail if you want me to make this available, or if you could get a copy to me. If someone wants me to ship them disks to get a copy, i suppose i could do that, though i'd prefer to be able to ftp it from somewhere. I have also put it on one of our machines for anonymous FTP. Machine name is hotel.cis.ksu.edu (129.130.10.12). The files are in pub/toolchest/ctex. They are in compressed cpio format, taking up about 3 Meg. I forgot who I got it from from, but it is, I'm told, public domain. It works fair for previewing. Doesn't have any kind of dot matrix support that I have found. (Any one got dvi to dotmatrix gidget?) I don't have time to make copies of all 12 discs for all that want it, but if the person who asked for it and voluntered to allow anyone to log in and get it would send me 12 discs (formated please) I will make a set and return them.
