[net.movies] Big Chill and clones

"... I think my wife wants to leave me for the Tom Selleck clone."

Tom Berenger is not a "Tom Selleck clone". He was starring in movies when
Tom Selleck was still scowling at the camera for the latest Sears Roebuck
catalog. He may not be as well known as Selleck, and the TV character that
Berenger's character in the movie played may have been similar but, he is
*not* just some clone they dug up for the part.

A friend of mine says that Tom Selleck played a character named J.T. Lancer
in "The Rockford Files" on TV a few years ago. (This is the name of the
character played by the TS clone in "The Big Chill"). I personally had
thought the name was a take-off on T.J. Hooker. Anybody know anything more
about this?

The character Tom Selleck paid on "The Rockford Files" was named Lance
White (not J.T. Lancer) and was a smooth, well-dressed, fast-talking
private detective who epitomized all the private eye cliches and
persisted in doing flamboyant things that should have gotten him killed
or worse, but naturally he got all the clients and all the women and
all the respect, which of course annoyed Jim Rockford to distraction.
The character appeared in two episodes in the next-to-last and the last
seasons; I don't recall the episode titles offhand (but I have them at
home somewhere).
