[comp.sys.att] Where is 'The STORE'?

tsouth@pro-pac.CTS.COM (Todd South) (07/27/88)

Hi Folks,

Listen, I and others on the feed have been hearing about
'The STORE' for some time now, but I haven't seen one message which
lists the address (Snail or UUCP) for this place. Could someone
in the know please post it (or email) since I am sure that a number
of folks out there, including me, would like to learn where to
contact this source? Enquiring minds NEED to know!

Todd South

There was a shar'd "installable" file called "CATALOG+IN" posted to the
net over a year ago which is required to interface with THE STORE! The
catalog provides descriptions of the available software and has a
really slick "order" menu which allows you to select packages you want,
tells you how big they are, let's you deselect them if you decide
against it, and generates the necessary uucp commands to perform the
magic.

This catalog is now out of date, but it includes a menu selection which
allows you to request a new catalog.

All packages from THE STORE! come as "installable" files which are
painlessly installed from within the catalog program or by "clicking"
on a copy of the file from UA. If you want to know whats going on or
want to perform the install steps manually, take a look at
/usr/bin/Instcpio.sh.

Software from THE STORE! are mostly binaries, though some do include
sources. Especially fun are the ones which exploit the Unix-pc's
graphics.

I have CATALOG+IN saved on a floppy but I neglected to save the nicely
shar'd version suitable for posting or mailing. Perhaps someone else
would be willing to repost the original shar'd version. (I guess I
could regenerate the shar file if someone gets really desperate, but
it won't have the nice instructions included in the original).

This following lists the size of each package available from THE
STORE! Transfer rates are based on 6700 characters per minute using a
1200 baud modem (your mileage may vary!). Cost is based on $.17 per
minute late night rate.

There are some additional package available which I don't have the specs
on which Richard mentions in an old posting. To my knowledge, this was the
last time THE STORE! catalog was updated.

PS. I haven't called up THE STORE! for at least a couple of months now. I
hope that it is still in operation and that all of this isn't wasted effort.

Yes, THE STORE! is still in operation. The latest catalog is from
August '87, so don't sweat if you haven't called lately.

I have been considering posting CATALOG+IN, but since it is in cpio format,
I would have to play around with scripts to get to work in a shared
version and then generate itself so that mailers don't barf.

Please don't. It's easy enough for folks who are listening to get it
themselves. As Joe Wood explained, add machine "shop", phone number
(201)957-4646, to your L.sys/Systems, and uucp the file
/store/STOREROOM/CATALOG+IN. We really don't need the 150Kb+
installable slithering through the net.

Had trouble calling them up over last weekend - no one answered the phone.
Just tried it manually and got the beep. Seem that the STORE in on line again.
