[comp.sys.att] Wanted: More Memory & More Speed!

mhg@mitre-bedford.ARPA (Mark H. Granoff) (09/07/88)

Greetings!

I would like to add memory to my system and (at the same time, if
possible) speed the sucker up. I have an AT&T 6300, 640KB memory,
20MB Seagate ST225 (w/ WD controller), 1 floppy, AT&T monochrome
monitor, running AT&T MS-DOS 3.2.

First, the memory. Even expanding to 1MB of ram would be good.
What's the difference between *expanded* memory and *extended* memory?
Which is better to have? I want it so applications have more space to
play with; I don't plan on writing programs to take advantage of the
extra memory. Will programs like WordPerfect or Turbo Pascal 4.0 take
advantage of memory >640KB?

Next, the speedup. I would rather not replace my CPU. Instead, I'm
willing to add a coprocessor as long as I can program and make sure it
isn't required by any resulting executables. If I bought a memory
board that had a co-processor, that would be good too.

So, what boards/chips are good ones to get, that will work in my
machine? What do they cost? Can you recommend any mail order places?
Any and all war stories will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
