I've had it. I am dumping 4.2 and going back to my old version of the compiler.. After fighting and scratching with rn,elm, perl to compile on this bloody thing I have given up.. The last straw was perl.. I was re-building it under the new compiler with disastrous results.. Who else has had the same troubles? -- Len Rose - Netsys,Inc. len@ames.arc.nasa.gov or len@netsys (soon to be netsys.COM) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Sep 88 16:05 CDT From: sysop@killer.Dallas.TX.US (Charles Boykin-BBS Admin) Subject: Re: C 4.2 Hmm. I have had no trouble at all with 4.2 and elm, perl, smail including alpha testing smail 3.1. The only problem I have noticed is with vnews and believe that is in the software rather than the compiler as it does fine on another machine with the same compiler. I don't know about that bug. Rn has worked just fine for me after I made some patches to: 1) Use struct dirent instead of struct direct, and include <dirent.h>; 2) Undefine the references to "char *sprintf()" and "int *(signal())"; 3) Comment out tokens after #else and #endif statements (not necessary for compilation, I just don't like _any_ compiler messages!); and 4) Add the line "char *CD, *CM, *HO;" to term.c, and an "extern" version to any other modules that need it. > Are there any > explanations why the optimizer has been screwed? Hi folks, If anybody has code that they *know* breaks this optimizer, I would be much appreciative if you would pass it along to me. I know a little bit about this program and may be able to help, but in any case am very interested in any bug reports you might be able to provide to me on this. Just for fun, here are a couple of debug options that you might wish to play with: cc -# {args} show execution of each part of the compile cc -W2,-s {args} send optim stats to stderr cc -W2,-z {args} send inline-expansion stats to stderr Steve --- Steve Friedl V-Systems, Inc. +1 714 545 6442 3B2-kind-of-guy friedl@vsi.com {backbones}!vsi.com!friedl attmail!vsi!friedl ------------Nancy Reagan on the UNIX-PC: "Just say slow"----------- ------------------------------------- To join this group or have your thoughts in the next issue, please send electronic mail to Ken Davis at the following address; {pacbell,netsys,hoptoad,well}!lamc!info-3b2-request The views expressed in Info-3b2 Digest are those of the individual authors only. ********************* End of Info-3b2 Digest *********************
