It is also used in MANY, many other applications. The 3B20 is designed to meet the needs of both the high-end minicomputer and low-end main frame computer users. It comes in a variety of configurations, based upon the 3B20S (simplex) and the 3B20D (duplex). D.O. Although this is the 3B2 group, I thought I would comment on something Dewey wrote recently about 3B20s.. The 3B20 is indeed used in the 5ESS. Indeed, it is used broadly within the AT&T network. This is the duplex model though. The 3B20 Simplex is a general purpose Unix machine, and is in wide use as such within AT&T, and I believe, many RBOCs. It is a 1 MIP, roughly, machine, and is similar in size, and power, to a VAX 11/780. It is wildly different than the 3B15 or 3B2 machines, as they are today, as it seems to have been designed for workhorse telco applications rather than for the computer market..(sysadm menus? We don't need no steenking sysadm menus :-) As a general purpose 1 mip Unix machine, I prefer it to the 3B15. I just didn't want people to think it was nothing but a 5ESS (which is impressive enough, now that I think about it.. ) Have a good one.. It is my understanding that the 3B20 is done with bit-slice (AMD 2900?) and it not entirely compatible with the other 3B machines. The Duplex model (3B20D) is a dual-everything model that is supposed to never go down. Somebody told me that there are machines are around that have had under a half an hour of downtime in >5 years of operation. Very impressive if you need this kind of thing and have the $ to pay for it. Anybody else know more?
